My name is Josie, and I'm a student who experienced the impact of being involved in a Gifted and Talented (GT) program until it was cancelled at my school. It used to be available from 3rd to 8th grade, but now it is only offered to 4th and 5th graders. This change has left me and many of my peers without access to the challenges and opportunities that GT programs provide.

GT programs are essential for students who show advanced skills and abilities, as they help foster their talents and ensure they remain engaged in learning. According to the National Association for Gifted Children, gifted programs provide customized learning to accommodate individual needs, resulting in higher student engagement and achievement. Studies show that students in GT programs can advance one to two grade levels higher in reading and math compared to peers not in such programs.

Having GT programs only for select grades diminishes the potential of young minds eager to learn and excel. We are denying talented children the ability to fully develop their academic and personal capabilities. Without these programs, many gifted students are left unchallenged and can become disengaged, which undermines their education and future opportunities.

To truly support all gifted students, GT programs should be available continuously from 3rd through 8th grade. This ensures continuity in skill development and provides a consistent support system throughout these crucial educational years. The benefits of reinstituting comprehensive GT programs can contribute not only to individual success but to the academic standing of our entire school community.

I urge educational administrators and policymakers to take immediate action and reinstate GT programs across all grades from 3rd to 8th. Let us nurture the potential of all our students and invest in a brighter future.
