Make GCSE Exam Language More Accessible for Neurodiverse Students

The Issue

Current GCSE exams are geared towards neurotypical students, overlooking the unique challenges faced by neurodiverse students. While concessions are made through the provision of additional time, the biggest hurdle remains: the indirect and often ambiguous language used in these exam papers. Studies show that neurodiverse individuals, such as those affected by ASD, ADHD, Dyslexia, etc., often struggle with understanding indirect communication styles (source: American Speech-Language-Hearing Association). Thus, the demand for a more straightforward and clear language in GCSE exam papers is necessary to maintain the principle of equal educational opportunities for all students, regardless of their neurological differences. We call upon the exam boards for an urgent review and revision of the language used in GCSE exams, delivering content that respects and accommodates the neurological diversity of our student population.
