Global warming has seen temperatures soaring in the past decade, and yet, most homes in the UK are not at all equipped to handle the heat. In fact, it’s the very opposite: our homes have been built to retain heat. With remote working conditions becoming the new norm, and rising temperatures making indoor environments unbearable, it's crucial for all citizens to have access to a healthy and safe living environment.

Unfortunately, most decent air conditioning units are expensive, making them an option only for those who can afford it. A safe, healthy environment shouldn't be dependent on what your bank balance is, nor should it be considered a luxury. As the world faces the undeniable effects of climate change, UK residents must have equitable access to cooling systems to improve quality of life and health, particularly during the increasingly warmer months.

Studies have shown that high indoor temperatures can lead to heat-related illnesses, decreased productivity, and in severe cases, even death. According to the Office for National Statistics, excess deaths in England were estimated to be around 2,000 due to the heatwave in 2020. Having free air conditioning in every home would not only prevent such tragedies but also enhance overall living conditions, making homes safe havens rather than potential health hazards.

We propose that the UK government mandates free air-conditioning installation in all homes. This can be funded through national climate initiatives or renewable energy grants that already exist for improving the energy efficiency of homes. These programs could be expanded to include air conditioning as a necessary adaptation to the changing climate.
