Make Formula 1 Broadcast 100% Live Free-to-Air TV in the UK
The Issue
I am a massive Formula 1 fan, and it pains me to see the difficulties fans like myself face to pursue our passion. Too many times I have seen fellow enthusiasts resort to roundabout ways to watch F1 for free, primarily because viewing options for this beloved motorsport have become overly commercialised. In some cases, people have stopped watching F1 altogether, as a way to boycott. Viewing numbers in the UK have dropped, and it is disheartening, so why try to lure them back to pay £100s a year to Sky???
I believe many share my frustration at the disproportionate amount of advertising and the disappointing fact that a mere single race a year is broadcast live on free-to-air channels. Why should our enjoyment of this global spectacle be truncated to mere highlights, which at times can be either late in the evening or the next day... though I must note, the Channel 4 presenters and commentators are the best in the field, I cannot fault them.
Formula 1 is not just another sport; it's a community that promotes so much passion and an appreciation for the extraordinary blend of human skill and machine capability. For a sport that boasts of a global viewership of roughly 2 billion every season, it's shocking that the UK, home to the offices and factories of many F1 teams, should restrict live broadcasting to paid channels.
In the spirit of fairness and inclusivity, we believe it is essential to make Formula 1 freely accessible on-air TV throughout the UK, like it used to be, when on the BBC. More accessibility would only spur growing interest in this amazing sport and remove the financial barrier that hinders fans from truly engaging with Formula 1.
The current Sky Sports "deal" which is set to last until 2029 is far too long. Last year (2024) was one of the best seasons of F1 in many years; SEVEN different winners who each won at least two races. If 2025 is to be just as good, then it means that people are missing out on great content. F1 TV Premium has been launched, which, again is behind a paywall, and will probably not be available in the UK because Sky are no more than greedy, selfish clowns sitting, with their feet on the desks, and wearing their rose-tinted glasses.
Liberty Media even said in 2019 that they wanted to reverse Bernie Ecclestone's decision, and make 75% of races live. (https://www.racefans.net/2019/05/25/f1-admits-uk-sky-deal-is-sub-optimal-and-wants-more-live-races-on-free-to-air-television/) Now, this would've been pleasantly satisfactory... however it has been more than 5 years, and since then, Sky's deal was extended to 2029... which makes me wonder what is going on? It's at a point now where 75% will no longer be sufficient.... 100% will be the bare minimum.
Join me in this campaign, sign our petition and let's push for a change that lets us enjoy Formula 1 racing without limitations. By doing so, we are not just advocating for greater access, but equally importantly, acknowledging the spirit of Formula 1 – a sport that has always been about breaking limits. Let's break some limits of our own. Please sign this petition.
