Make fireworks legal for June 19th annually
The Issue
Growing up, June 19th has always held a special place in my heart. Known as Juneteenth, it represents the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, learned they were free — two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. For many Black Americans, Juneteenth is a day of celebration, a day of remembrance, and a day of hope. It's a reminder of the long journey towards freedom and the continued fight for equality and justice in America.
Yet, every year, the way we can celebrate this significant day remains limited. Fireworks, which symbolize freedom and independence on July 4th, are illegal in many areas when it comes to commemorating Juneteenth. It feels like an oversight, an incompleteness in the recognition of what this day truly signifies. We should have the right to express our joy, reflect on our history, and honor our ancestors without limitations.
Legalizing fireworks for Juneteenth would be a powerful acknowledgement of our history and our culture. It would allow communities to unite in festivity, just like on the Fourth of July, with fireworks lighting up the sky as a symbol of freedom.
Many cities and states have already taken steps to formally recognize Juneteenth as a holiday, but we must do more. Allowing for the legal use of fireworks is a meaningful and symbolic gesture towards equity. It helps to validate Juneteenth as a moment deserving of the same celebratory status as Independence Day.
This change can start small, with cities or states introducing temporary permits for citizen-organized firework displays or designating areas where families can gather safely to celebrate. By easing restrictions on this one day, we can provide a safe and regulated way to let the celebration shine brightly.
