As a parent of a child with epilepsy, I have seen firsthand the challenges in ensuring the safety and well-being of my child, who experiences a variety of seizure types. Sadly, many people, including those who work with children such as teachers and childcare providers, lack the necessary knowledge to recognize and properly respond to seizures. This gap in knowledge not only exacerbates the fears and concerns of parents like myself, but also places our children at increased risk.

In Victoria alone, there are thousands of children who attend schools and early learning centres every day. With over 250,000 people in Australia living with epilepsy, it's critical to equip educators and caregivers with the necessary skills to effectively support those affected by this condition.

Epilepsy is complex; there are over 30 different seizure types, each requiring specific responses. While epilepsy first aid is already part of general first aid training, it is not always emphasized or adequately covered, particularly in institutions directly responsible for our children’s immediate care.

Making epilepsy awareness training mandatory in Victorian schools and early learning centres would offer immense benefits. It could enable staff to recognize early symptoms, provide immediate assistance, and reduce the uncertainties and fears associated with epilepsy. Moreover, it would foster an inclusive environment for children with epilepsy, ensuring their safety is prioritized, and alleviate the anxiety that many families face daily.

This training could be integrated into existing professional development programs for educators, and supported by organizations specializing in epilepsy care. Providing all school staff and childcare providers with this specific training is a realistic step toward making our schools safer and more inclusive.

By electing to demand mandatory epilepsy awareness training, we are choosing to safeguard the health and welfare of thousands of children across Victoria. This measure would not only educate teachers and carers but also normalize epilepsy and seizures, promoting empathy and understanding in the broader school community.

We cannot afford to remain passive on this issue. The health and safety of our children depend on our ability to act. Together, we can make a concerted effort to build an informed and supportive environment for those touched by epilepsy.
