Make Easter Monday a paid statutory holiday in BC

Make Easter Monday a paid statutory holiday in BC
The Issue
Every year during Easter, I am reminded of the disparity in holiday benefits between government employees and the rest of us in British Columbia (BC). While government employees enjoy a long four-day weekend, inclusive of Easter Monday, the taxpayers, who essentially fund these government roles, are left with just a three-day weekend. This disparity is not only unfair but also creates an unequal working culture.
Easter, a significant time in the calendar for many, is a chance for families and friends to come together, celebrate, and rest. However, for the majority who are not government employees in BC, this chance is cut short by one day. This issue is not merely about holiday fairness, but it speaks to a larger issue of inequality in how holidays are granted across different sectors of employment in our province.
Currently, Easter Monday is recognized only as a government holiday in BC, putting everyone else—especially those in private sectors—at a disadvantage. According to statistics, provincial and federal government employees make up less than 20% of the total workforce in BC. This means that more than 80% of the working population is not entitled to a four-day Easter weekend. The lack of uniformity in holiday regulations further exacerbates this division between the public sector and everyone else.
Making Easter Monday a paid statutory holiday for everyone in BC would not just ensure fairness but also promote a healthier work-life balance. Studies have shown that adequate rest and quality time with loved ones contribute to better mental health, increased productivity, and overall job satisfaction. Considering these factors, it is more than reasonable to level the playing field by introducing this change.
Therefore, I urge the BC government to consider making Easter Monday a paid statutory holiday for everyone. By doing so, we would be aligning ourselves with provinces such as Alberta and Quebec that recognize additional holidays, reflecting a more inclusive approach to holiday entitlement.
Please join me in calling on the BC government to address this inequality and make this change. Sign this petition to ensure that all BC workers are treated fairly and get the work-life balance they deserve. Together, we can make a difference.
