Make dress code equal for boys and girls
The Issue
As a female student, I've often found myself dress coded for attire considered inappropriate, while noticing that male counterparts can wear similar outfits without facing the same consequences. This disparity is not just unfair; it feels like a daily reminder of an underlying bias inherent in our school's dress code policy. It's not just my experience either – many girls at our school face the same issue, leading to unnecessary stress and distraction from what should be our main focus: education. And they will only talk to the girls who have differences than others. For example, some may have different styles like goth, emo, grunge, preppy, and more. They can affect how a girl sees them self. And they only talk to the people who are not a problem in our school when there are others who come to school wearing really short shorts and they don’t get told to change or anything they don’t even get a warning. But if I get dress coded for my stomach barely showing or my fingers being barely past my shorts.
The current dress code policy disproportionately targets female students, dictating what is deemed appropriate based on outdated standards and gender stereotypes. Meanwhile, boys often roam with tank tops or shorts deemed too short, yet receive no reprimands. This double standard needs to change.
According to a report by the National Women's Law Center, biased dress codes can foster environments of inequality and can lead to discrimination. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) emphasizes that dress codes should be equitable and fair across all genders, embracing policies that do not perpetuate gender discrimination.
We propose the following concrete changes to our school's dress code:
1. Clear guidelines that apply equally to all students, regardless of gender.
2. Comprehensive review and revision of dress code language to remove gender-specific terminology.
3. Establishment of a diverse student committee to oversee and provide input on dress code changes.
4. Training for staff to fairly and consistently apply dress code regulations.
Creating an equitable dress code can foster a more inclusive and focused educational environment for everyone. It’s vital that all students feel valued and respected and that gender bias has no place in our schools.
