The issue
Growing up in Queensland, I've always been drawn to the gentle and calming presence of bunnies. As someone who battles with anxiety and mental health issues, the thought of having a pet bunny offers a beacon of comfort and relief. The joy and companionship that bunnies can provide are unparalleled; they have an innate ability to brighten difficult days and support emotional wellbeing. Sadly, due to the current laws in Queensland, my dream—along with many others—is beyond reach.
Queensland is one of the few places where owning a domesticated rabbit is illegal, unlike other states in Australia where they are accepted as beloved pets. According to studies, animals, like bunnies, promote mental health improvements by decreasing stress and anxiety levels, offering companionship, and even lowering blood pressure. Given these benefits, it's perplexing why bunnies remain banned.
Domesticated bunnies are distinct from their wild counterparts. They are bred to rely on human care and are conditioned to live within a household environment, thereby posing minimal threat to local agriculture and wildlife when managed responsibly. Owners of domesticated rabbits in other states have shown that appropriate measures can suppress any potential negative impact. This includes ensuring they are desexed, registered, and kept in secure environments where escape is not an option.
A change in law for domesticated rabbit ownership would not only align Queensland with the rest of the country but would also offer benefits to thousands of potential bunny owners who seek the joy and emotional support these animals provide. While it's crucial to protect our natural environment, with the right provisions in place, responsible bunny ownership can be achieved.
I urge policymakers in Queensland to re-evaluate the current stance on domesticated bunnies and consider the numerous benefits these loving creatures can offer, both to individuals and families. By implementing regulations that allow for the safe and responsible ownership of bunnies, we can enrich lives and enhance mental wellbeing.
Please join me in calling for the legalization of domesticated bunnies in Queensland. Sign this petition to help make a change and give countless residents, like myself, the opportunity to experience the companionship and peace that only a bunny can bring.
