Make diplomas in Alberta for second semester optional

Make diplomas in Alberta for second semester optional
The Issue

Education is fundamental to our society, providing the skills and knowledge necessary to foster future generations. In Alberta, diplomas are an essential component of the education system, serving as a standard of assessment for high school students. However, the mandatory nature of diplomas in the second semester poses significant challenges for many students that can negatively impact their academic, emotional, and mental well-being.
First and foremost, the stress and pressure associated with mandatory second semester diplomas can be overwhelming. Many students struggle to manage the heavy workload in addition to preparing for these high-stakes exams. This pressure not only affects students’ academic performances but also their mental health, leading to increased levels of anxiety and stress-related disorders. According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, over 20% of Canadian youth are impacted by mental health issues, making it imperative for us to address factors exacerbating these concerns.
Furthermore, the rigid nature of mandatory diplomas does not consider the diverse learning styles and paces of students. Every student deserves the chance to learn and demonstrate their abilities in a manner that plays to their strengths. For instance, project-based learning or cumulative assessments over a semester can provide a more comprehensive evaluation of a student's understanding and capabilities.
By making second semester diplomas optional, we can offer students greater flexibility, empowering them to choose assessment methods that suit their learning styles and circumstances. This option can particularly benefit students who may already have post-secondary plans in place or those who wish to focus on specific subject areas, enhancing both their learning experience and outcomes.
Therefore, we call on the Alberta Ministry of Education to review the current mandatory examination policies and introduce an optional model for second semester diplomas. By doing so, we contribute to an equitable and supportive educational environment for all students. Please sign this petition to advocate for a more flexible and student-centered approach to diploma exams in Alberta.
