My husband, Bryan Cupps, and I are victims of defamation from our daughter and her social media followers because of her psychosis. We want to petition our government officials to make defamation (libel and slander) a criminal offense and not just civil. The person spreading lies (even if that person is mentally ill) should have to face the same consequences as the penalty of the crime of which they are accusing. It is not fair or just that someone who has “nothing to lose” can damage another person’s reputation or cost them their livelihood just because they are angry or trying to get “clicks” and attention on their social media posts and accounts.
