Make Daylight Savings Time Permanent

The Issue

Feelings of depression, isolation and listlessness blanket me every time the clocks turn back. I am not alone in this - for many, day length fluctuations have negative impacts on our mental and emotional health. Simultaneously, there is a growing sentiment nationally (USA) to make Daylight Savings Time permanent.

Scientific studies back up our feelings - one in particular by the American Psychological Association indicates that the onset of winter can exacerbate depressive symptoms due to the reduction of daylight exposure (American Psychological Association, 2015). Making Daylight Savings Time permanent could mitigate this effect by providing us all with more daylight during the colder and darker months.

Furthermore, the transition in and out of Daylight Savings Time has been linked to an increase in heart attacks (Amneet Sandhu, MD, Cardiovascular Research, University of Colorado, 2014), and automobile accidents (Johns Hopkins University and Stanford University, 2014). These are burdens we can alleviate by steadying our clocks.

The time change is not just a disruption; it impacts our health and wellbeing. Please join me in calling for a permanent Daylight Savings Time. Let's commit to ending this seasonal disruption and foster a more stable, healthy community. Please sign this petition.
