Make date rape drug testing more readily available!
The Issue
On November 11th of this year someone drugged my drink. My friend and I went to The Comedy Store in West Hollywood, California hoping to get a few laughs in and enjoy the night when the opposite happened. I was found unconscious, seizing, and violently throwing up in the bathroom stall. The next thing I remember I woke up in a hospital trying to piece together my story, when they came in and could only speculate that someone had drugged my drinks. Signs and symptoms correlated, but when asked for certainty, that was something out of reach. The hospital did not carry the resources to test for any of the date rape drugs, such as Roofie.
After a long and terrifying night, we were given information to talk to other clinics in the area, all of which did not have the resources to test for the possible use of date rape drugs. Not only did I want closure and evidence to know what had happened to me, I wanted the ability to go and file a police report so that whoever did this to me, couldn’t do it to someone else.
Until now, I was unaware that hospitals and/or clinics did not have the ability to test for date rape drugs. I would like to bring awareness and change, and mandate these resources be available in every hospital and inform all people that the threat is out there. I believe that we need to do more to protect our people. One more person enduring this is too much, and to think, every time this happens, their assailant is getting away.
