Make Darius the 2023 Time’s “Person of the year
The issue
This is a petition to make Darius, otherwise known as “King Darius” or “Darizz” Time Magazine’s “Person of the year”. Darius is a non - verbal 18 year man with autism who’s unique personality and charm has captured the attention of the online sphere. His day to day life is documented by his mother Irisa, whom is intent on raising awareness about kids and adults with autism. As of now, the account featuring Darius has over 1 million followers on Tik Tok and over 70k followed on Instagram as well as other platforms. Darius has arguably popularised and destigmatized “stimming” (self stimulation), which is classified as repetitive movement and sounds; a common behavioural trait among people with autism. Since Darius has trouble talking, he express himself through his stimming. Darius’ “stims” (different types of movement and sounds) have not only been embraced but revered and glorified by fans of Darius who even have their own personal favourites such as the “pool stim”, the “closet stim” or the “go to bed stim”. Stimming which was formerly an obscure behavioural trait of autism not commonly known by people outside of the autism community has now been incorporated into mainstream vernacular because of Darius. Darius has developed a cult like following on social media and even has his own fanpage, and fan music sampled from his stimming. Darius fans have even developed their own vernacular and phraseology, whereby anyone outside the Darius community would be unfamiliar with the terms used. In short, because of Darius there has been a renewed interest in autism as well as a further acceptance for people who act differently to others because of autism. Behaviour that may have been shunned in the past is now recognised for its authenticity and celebrated. Making Darius Time’s Person of the year arguably be the greatest turning point in the history of man
