Make credit checks illegal for car insurance premiums

Make credit checks illegal for car insurance premiums
The Issue
The practice of using consumer credit reports to determine car insurance premiums is both unfair and discriminatory. It is high time we address this concern and push for legislative changes to make credit checks irrelevant in calculating car insurance rates.
Millions of responsible drivers are being unfairly penalized simply because they have less than stellar credit. According to various studies, about 1 in 5 Americans have subprime credit scores, which can in turn drastically increase their insurance premiums. This directly affects low-income families who are already struggling financially and need vehicle insurance to work and care for their families. Penalizing these individuals for issues unrelated to their driving abilities is unjust.
Evidence has shown that there is no substantial correlation between a person’s credit score and their likelihood of filing claims. The Consumer Federation of America (CFA) supports this claim, highlighting a profound disconnect between financial shortcomings and driving risks. Despite this, insurance companies continue to hide behind the facade of statistical relevance to justify these unfair premiums.
Moreover, allowing credit checks perpetuates a cycle of poverty where the ones who are already financially disadvantaged end up paying more than they can afford. This is detrimental not only on individual levels but also overall economic health. Fair access to affordable car insurance should not be a privilege only for those with good credit scores but a basic right for every driver.
We need to urge lawmakers to put an end to this biased practice. The current policies have no place in fair and equitable insurance market.
Sign this petition to call for a change in insurance regulations to prohibit credit checks in the determination of car insurance premiums. Stand with us to advocate for a fairer system for everyone.
