We have a wealth of country lanes in this country. Many of these are narrow and twisty, and unsuitable for through vehicular traffic, but eminently suitable for walkers, cyclists and horse riders. However, far too many motorists, particularly near towns, are using them as rat runs, putting people at risk of serious injury or death. In the majority of cases there are main roads for drivers to use, and country lanes were never designed for car traffic. If people live on these lanes, then fair enough, they need to access their properties, but many using them don't. When active travel is being encouraged, isn't it about time we applied common sense and deterred motorists from using them, leaving them free to be used safely by walkers, cyclists and horse riders. This will have benefits for health and the environment. I'm sure many more would be encouraged to use them if they felt safer, not having to dodge cars, vans and lorries all the time.
