Make Conham Hill and Church Road Safe for Everyone

Make Conham Hill and Church Road Safe for Everyone
The Issue
🚨 Conham Hill & Church Road Are Unsafe!
Potholes, speeding, and blind bends risk lives daily. No safe crossings, no space for pedestrians. We’ve asked the Council for over a year — nothing. Sign now for urgent resurfacing, crossings, and lower speeds.
---
The roads on Conham Hill and Church Road in Hanham, South Gloucestershire, have become increasingly dangerous and neglected.
- The road surface is in dire need of repair
- There is no safe crossing for pedestrians
- Unsafe parking by visitors to Conham River Park, leads to blocked roads and unsafe conditions
- Vehicles speed dangerously around blind bends, putting pedestrians at risk of serious accidents
As a resident, I’ve witnessed countless near misses — drivers swerving too fast around Conham Hill, families struggling to cross safely, and pedestrians being honked at while simply trying to reach their cars.
I have been raising these issues with local representatives for the last year. Despite contacting April Begley, councillor for South Gloucestershire, no meaningful action has been taken. On 25th July, she responded by email: “the road lies between Bristol and South Gloucester” However, Ordnance Survey maps confirm that this road lies firmly within South Gloucestershire. The lack of clarity and urgency from those responsible has left our community at risk of serious accidents.
The situation has only worsened due to increased traffic from Bristol’s “Liveable Neighbourhoods” project, which has pushed more vehicles into our area without any safety upgrades to the roads that are under increased strain.
Some recent quotes from local residents and road users:
“I live on this street and the speeding is terrible! (…) In the morning when you try to get into your own car you have to battle the traffic to open your door.” — Bethany Hibbert, local resident
“I cycle on this spot of road — the road surface is the worst I have encountered.” — Sarah Pembury, road user
“This road bulged my tyre and damaged my wheel.” — Joe Cott, road user
“It’s been bad for years but slowly getting worse. I do think it has come to a point where it is the worst it’s ever been. I have heard (although don’t know if this is true) that because half of the road is owned by Bristol City Council and half South Glos they argue over who is responsible for the work/paying for it.” — Alison Bleadon, local resident
“These potholes are bad, it has definitely damaged my car (…) it’s so dangerous for pedestrians on that blind bend.” — Michelle M, local resident
We are calling for immediate action to protect lives and improve safety. Proposed changes:
- Full resurfacing of Conham Hill
- Vegetation trimmed back to create space for a safe pedestrian walkway
- A clearly marked walkway on the south-east side of Conham Hill to give everyone, including less able residents, safe access to Conham River Park
- Extension of the 20mph speed limit from Crews Hole Road up Conham Hill and Church Road
- Zebra crossings outside the “100 Steps” entrance and Christchurch Preschool — ideally with raised crossings to slow speeding traffic and double yellow lines added on the South east side of Church Rd (outside the church) to allow safer crossing
- Drop kerbs along Church Road to improve accessibility for wheelchairs, prams, and those with mobility difficulties
- Double yellow lines on the north-west side of Conham Hill to prevent dangerous over-parking during peak times
According to government data, improving road surfaces and adding safety features can reduce collisions by up to 30%. Why should our community wait for a serious accident before change is made?
This is about protecting our families, our children, and our most vulnerable residents. By signing this petition, you are demanding that South Gloucestershire Council act now — before someone gets hurt. Conham Hill and Church Road need to be safe for EVERYONE.
