Make civic sense subject compulsory in Indian schools

Make civic sense subject compulsory in Indian schools
The Issue
Civic sense is the cornerstone of a functioning society, yet it is a subject often overlooked in formal education. In India, the absence of an ingrained sense of civic responsibility in many aspects of daily life has contributed to numerous societal issues. As someone who understands the importance of civic sense, I am deeply concerned about this gap in our education system.
The general lack of awareness about fundamental civic concepts—such as public conduct, cleanliness, respect for community spaces, and understanding civic duties—has resulted in numerous societal challenges. Streets are polluted with waste, public facilities are frequently vandalized, and there is a basic disregard for others' rights and communal property. These are not just inconveniences; they represent larger systemic challenges that impact our quality of life, economic efficiency, and national pride.
It is imperative that civic sense is not left as an afterthought but instead developed as an essential component of our schooling system. Introducing a civic sense subject from a young age across all private and government schools in India can address these issues at their root. Education serves as the best tool to influence future generations, instilling in them the values necessary for a cooperative, respectful, and cleaner society.
Countries with strong civic education programs showcase the benefits of a populace that understands their responsibilities and rights, leading to environments that are not only clean but also marked by enhanced respect and harmony among citizens. By cultivating civic awareness in children from a young age, especially within the structured environment of school, we set a foundation for long-term positive change.
We propose a comprehensive curriculum developed in collaboration with educational experts, environmentalists, and civic authorities which can be seamless across boards like CBSE, ICSE, and state boards. This curriculum would include actionable projects, practical sessions in local communities, and interactive modules to make learning engaging and impactful.
By signing this petition, we are urging the Ministry of Education in India to take immediate steps to include civic sense as a mandatory subject across all schools. Let us work together towards a future where every Indian is equipped with the knowledge and habits needed to uplift our country as a whole. Please sign this petition to support a cleaner, more respectful, and community-conscious India.
