Make Cedar Student Halls Lift Accessible to All

The Issue

We are a diverse community of students, some of whom face daily challenges due to mobility issues or disabilities. This petition starts from personal experience. Those among us with mobility issues have been left to struggle, as we lack the necessary adjustments in our facilities, specifically the lift in Cedar Student Halls. We're deprived of an experience that most students take for granted: the simple act of reaching our rooms easily and comfortably.

It's not just a question of convenience, but of basic rights. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that 1 in 4 U.S. adults – 61 million Americans – have a disability that impacts major life activities. Mobility is the most common disability type, affecting 1 in 7 adults (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2020). Ensuring accessibility is not just a kind gesture, it is our right.

The lift in Cedar Student Halls must be fixed and made accessible to all students as a matter of equality and dignity. It is crucial that we turn this situation around. Our peers deserve to live their lives on campus without daily reminders of inequality and inaccessibility.

We urge the management of Cedar Student Halls and the wider university to acknowledge our plea and take immediate action. Ensuring equal access to all facilities for all students should never be an afterthought; it should be a core principle. Let's make Cedar Student Halls accessible to all, and let the first step be fixing the lift. Your signature can be the push we need to enact this change.
