Make CCTV Cameras Mandatory in All Australian Childcare Centres – Protect Our Children Now

The issue

As a mother of two young children, I was devastated to hear about the horrific abuse that occurred in childcare centres right here in Australia.

Like so many parents, I place my trust in the childcare system every single day. I hand over my babies, believing they will be nurtured, guided, and most importantly kept safe. But the recent revelations about a childcare worker who allegedly abused dozens of children across multiple centres in Melbourne have shattered that trust. It has shaken me to my core.

This is one of the most disturbing and widespread breaches of child protection we have ever seen in this country. The worst part? It went unnoticed for years. That is what terrifies me most.

This man was able to move from centre to centre, undetected and unnoticed.

And so I ask: how many more children are suffering in silence ? It is happening again, somewhere, right now.

That’s why I’m calling for urgent, nation-wide action: make CCTV cameras mandatory in all licensed childcare centres across Australia.

Let’s think about this logically.

We have cameras in our offices, shops, gyms, car parks, even in elevators.

Why not simply in the common areas of childcare centres, Why are we protecting retail stock more thoroughly than the most vulnerable members of our society?

CCTV is not the final solution, but it is a vital tool in a broken system.

 • It offers a layer of protection where words fail.

 • It provides evidence when a child is too young or too scared to speak.

 • It holds staff and centres accountable.

 • And most importantly, it gives parents peace of mind.

We understand that privacy is also a concern for many families. This petition supports installing CCTV only in shared, communal areas. Footage would be managed under strict security protocols, including encrypted storage, limited access by authorised bodies, and automatic deletion after a short retention period unless needed. The aim is not constant monitoring, but rather a protective measure to deter harm, ensure transparency, and provide accountability just like we expect at the shops, offices, and public venues where people’s safety matters.

Children cannot advocate for themselves. They rely on us on adults to stand up, to speak out, and to change what needs changing.

Please support this petition. Sign it. Share it. Speak about it. For our children.

Together, we can demand visibility.

Together, we can protect the voiceless.
