Make Carbon Credit Purchase Mandatory for Space Exploration and Aviation Activities

The Issue

As we grapple with the ever-pressing issue of climate change, a deep-rooted problem remains largely unchecked: the staggering amounts of greenhouse gases emitted by space exploration and private flying activities. Despite our collective efforts for environmental conservation, these significant contributors to global emissions are rarely held accountable, and the consequences for communities worldwide are overwhelming.

For people like me, born and raised in Macau, the effects of climate change are devastatingly clear. Our home is now constantly battered by extreme weather events, such as supercharged thunderstorms and ferocious typhoons, making each summer an unbearable struggle. These weather patterns are direct consequences of climate change, exacerbated by large-scale activities that pump more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. While we are doing our part, it is high time that the major contributors take responsibility.

Consider the staggering statistics: a single round-trip flight between New York and California generates about 20% of the greenhouse gases an average car emits annually. And that’s just one flight. Celebrities and upperclassmen who frequently travel by private jet only escalate this problem and even make our efforts insignificant. Furthermore, the European Space Agency estimates that space missions emit around 300 metric tons of carbon dioxide each, a pollution level comparable to 55 transatlantic flights.

In 2019 alone, air travel contributed roughly 915 million tons of CO2, accounting for 2.4% of global emissions. Meanwhile, space rocket launches, though less frequent, significantly harm the ozone layer. These activities bypass our crucial efforts to reduce emissions and safeguard our planet. All the while, those residing in vulnerable regions, such as Macau, suffer the devastating consequences of unchecked pollution.

We are not suggesting that we abandon space exploration or air travel altogether. Both pursuits have their place in our world. However, we must hold these industries accountable for their environmental impact. That is why we are calling for a mandatory requirement that all space exploration and aviation activities purchase carbon credits. This approach will account for the emissions generated and channel critical funds into renewable energy projects and climate change solutions.

Your support can help bridge the gap between the tireless efforts of individuals and the massive emissions caused by these industries. By signing this petition, you are advocating for a future where the wonders of space exploration and the convenience of air travel can coexist with a healthy, sustainable planet. Let’s ensure that while we dream of faraway galaxies, we don’t lose sight of our responsibility to protect our homes.

Please sign this petition to mandate carbon credit purchases for space exploration and flying activities and help make this vision a reality.
