Make Canyon View Park Great Again

Make Canyon View Park Great Again

The Issue

I live in the western part of Grand Junction, a beautiful community that prides itself on the charm and lifestyle we've created around Canyon View Park. Sadly, of late, the park's beauty and allure have been eroding due to poor maintenance - a situation that is personally affecting me and others in the vicinity. Our home values have started declining, and the once bustling park now reels under negative feedback from visitors who see it as poorly cared for.

Our dogs frequently suffer when they step on goat heads, and our children are subject to physical hazards on account of overgrown grasses. Things have worsened to the point where our cheerful cheerleaders no longer find the park's terrain suitable for practice.

Our park's ambiance is calling out for attention - the grass needs regular mowing, watering, and overall maintenance. The playground, in particular, requires professional repair and consistent upkeep, to ensure safety and functionality for our future generations.

The city’s response to our pleas has been that they are saving water. However they frequently water during the heat of the day in the summer and they water the sidewalks and nearby roads causing water to overflow into the gutters. There are other ways they could save water if they wanted to adjust their sprinkler head locations and timing.

Did you know that well-maintained parks can boost property values by up to 20%? (Kuo, F. E., & Sullivan, W. C. 2001). They also have a positive effect on community health and social engagement, facts which further underscore the urgency for action.

We plea to the staff of Canyon View Park, those responsible for its upkeep, to put a proper maintenance plan in place, and carry out the necessary remedial measures to restore our park's former glory. It's time our park mirrors our commitment to community values – let us provide a safe, beautiful, and inviting space for residents and visitors alike. Please, sign this petition to support and hasten this much-needed action.
