Make British Sign Language a Mandatory Subject in Schools

The Issue

British Sign Language (BSL) is a vital means of communication for over 150,000 people in the UK.

Despite this, it is not currently included as a compulsory subject within our educational system. This lack of formal education not only isolates those who rely on BSL to communicate but also prevents others from learning this valuable skill.

By making BSL part of the mandatory curriculum, we can foster inclusivity and understanding among our youth while equipping them with an essential tool for communication. We urge the Department for Education to recognise the importance of BSL and make it a compulsory subject in primary and secondary schools across Britain.
