Make Brisbane a More Dog-Friendly Society

Make Brisbane a More Dog-Friendly Society
The issue
Demanding improvements that will welcome dogs into our community more openly is the focus of this petition. Our goal is to transform Brisbane into a more relaxed, dog-friendly city, not unlike many other major cities worldwide. We believe that it's high time to enable our beloved pets to accompany us on public transportation, visit shopping centres and retail stores, join us in our workplaces and dine with us in restaurants.
Many major cities worldwide have embraced a more dog-friendly culture, allowing pets to integrate seamlessly into daily life. Here are a few standout examples:
1. Berlin, Germany - Dogs are widely accepted in public spaces, including restaurants, cafes, and public transport. Many workplaces also allow dogs, and there are numerous parks and off-leash areas.
2. Paris, France - Known for its dog-friendly atmosphere, Paris allows dogs in most restaurants, cafes, and shops. They are also welcome on public transport, including the metro and buses.
3. Amsterdam, Netherlands - Dogs are welcome on public transport (often for free or a small fee) and in many businesses, including shops and cafes. The city has plenty of green spaces and off-leash parks.
4. Stockholm, Sweden - Sweden has strong animal welfare laws and a highly dog-friendly culture. Dogs are allowed on public transport, in many workplaces, and in outdoor seating areas of restaurants.
5. Portland, USA - Often ranked as one of the most dog-friendly cities in the U.S., Portland boasts numerous dog-friendly restaurants, breweries, and businesses. There are also over 30 off-leash parks and even dog-friendly hiking trails.
6. Barcelona, Spain - Barcelona has made strides in integrating dogs into urban life, allowing them on public transport and in many shops. The city has also increased the number of off-leash areas and dog-friendly beaches.
These cities demonstrate how a more inclusive approach to dogs in public spaces can benefit both pet owners and the community as a whole. And although Brisbane does well in some areas, it has the opportunity to follow their lead and create a more dog-friendly urban environment across the board.
According to RSPCA Australia 2022, there are an estimated 29 million pets in Australia. With approximately 61% of households owning pets, dogs are the most common, found in 40% of homes. We believe such statistics illustrate the prevalent role dogs play in our lives.
City life often means long commutes and extended time away from home, leaving our pets alone for hours on end. A more dog-friendly Brisbane would allow pets to accompany their owners on public transport and even into workplaces, reducing separation anxiety for both pets and their owners. And who knows, what other benefits this may provide. By embracing these changes, we can create a more connected, balanced, and pet-inclusive urban lifestyle.
Therefore, we urge lawmakers, city planners, as well as local businesses to consider the benefits of transforming Brisbane into a more dog-friendly society. By revising outdated policies and embracing a more inclusive vision of urban spaces, we can create an environment where everyone, including our dogs, thrives. The time for change is now. Please sign this petition and join the movement towards making Brisbane a more inclusive place for our four-legged friends.
