Make boys flag football a varsity sport in NYC schools

Make boys flag football a varsity sport in NYC schools
The Issue
Our children deserve to play the sport they love in a safe environment. For many boys across New York City, flag football is not just a pastime; it’s a passion and an integral part of their lives. Despite the rising popularity of flag football among young athletes, NYC schools have yet to recognize it as a varsity sport for boys. It's time to change that.
By not providing boys with the opportunity to play flag football at the varsity level, we are denying them the myriad benefits that come with being part of a school sports team. Varsity sports encourage teamwork, discipline, and time management, and they help students build a sense of community and school spirit. More importantly, they allow students to stay physically active while striving for excellence both on and off the field.
According to the National Federation of State High School Associations, flag football has seen a significant increase in participation nationwide, with more than 1.5 million students playing in school programs in 2022 alone. Despite this national trend, New York City schools have been slow to adapt, leaving behind countless students yearning to showcase their talents while representing their schools.
Introducing boys flag football as a varsity sport in NYC schools would not only foster athletic potential but also provide a safer alternative to tackle football, reducing the risk of injury. Flag football emphasizes speed, agility and strategy, making it suitable for a wider range of students who may feel apprehensive about the physical demands of traditional football.
We urge the New York City Department of Education, school administrators, and the Public Schools Athletic League (PSAL) to recognize the importance and demand for boys flag football. Let's provide our children with this fantastic opportunity to develop their skills, prove their dedication, and participate in a sport they truly love.
