The Issue

As a dedicated boys badminton athlete, I have witnessed firsthand the passion and dedication of my teammates and competitors who pour hours of practice and effort into representing their schools with pride. We travel, compete, and strive for excellence just like athletes in other sports, yet our achievements are not fully recognized. Unlike other sports or divisions in MEL league, boys badminton points don’t carry the same weight in the league standings.

Currently, the MEL league does not allow boys badminton points to contribute meaningfully towards league standings, and this has significant ramifications. Not only does it affect team morale, but it also limits opportunities for individual growth and advancement. Consistent with this oversight, the section of the Sacramento Joaquin Section (SJS) prevents boys badminton players from advancing to regionals in the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF).

The SJS section is additionally the only section, other than the Northern section (who does not send up any badminton athletes at all) to not send boys up to the CIF regionals. This is disparity reveals that boys badminton has been implemented and has worked, and that the SJS section is lagging behind.

As a boys badminton athlete, I have witnessed firsthand how the restrictions placed on boys badminton athletes has inhibited on the growth of the sport. This is very important, because when a sport lacks caring diversity, like badminton does in the MEL league and the SJS section, it makes the sport feel smaller, and much more insignificant; when in reality this sport is a passion of mine and many others alike.

Evidence supports the value of sports in developing teamwork, discipline, and perseverance among students. According to the National Federation of State High School Associations, equal participation and recognition in sports contribute significantly to the holistic development of students. Denying boys badminton players the same opportunities afforded to their peers in other sports contradicts the ethos of promoting equal opportunity and fair competition within school sports.

We propose a change to rectify these inequalities: let the MEL league recognize boys badminton points just as they do for other sports, just as our sister leagues have, and allow the boys' section of SJS to send top players to regionals within CIF, similar to their peers in other sports. These changes would not only honor the hard work and dedication of current athletes but would also invigorate the sport by attracting new participants eager to achieve and compete under fair conditions.

I urge the leaders of the MEL league and Sacramento Joaquin Section to reconsider their current policies and align boys badminton with the standards of recognition and advancement enjoyed by other sports. Please support our call for equity in school sports by signing this petition and help transform the future of boys badminton into one of fairness, growth, and opportunity for all passionate athletes.
