I first realized this issue when I discovered the new blackout license plate option for motorcycles. This was a fantastic discovery, as I immediately imagined how incredibly fitting it would be on so many vehicles. However, I was greatly disappointed that the option does not extend to moped owners. In Minnesota, as per the Department of Public Safety, moped owners can't get any custom plate designs, including blackout plates. This seems like an unusual and unnecessary restriction. In 2019, approximately 20,000 mopeds were registered in Minnesota according to the MMSC (Minnesota Motorcycle Safety Center). A significant number of Minnesota residents surely would enjoy having this extra customization option for their mopeds. Let us stand together and push for change to give moped owners the same aesthetic choices as motorcycle owners. We urge the Minnesota Department of Public Safety to review and rectify this disparity and make blackout plates available to moped owners.
