The Issue

In many parts of the world, particularly in regions with high rates of poverty, children are deprived of their fundamental right to education. While there are existing laws, such as the Right to Education Act, they often fail to reach the most marginalized communities effectively. Therefore, we propose that basic education up to Class V or Class VIII be made free and compulsory for all children. This initiative will not only fulfill the educational needs but serve broader societal objectives.

Firstly, by providing basic education, all children have the opportunity to learn essential values and skills that will enable them to contribute positively to society. Education is a transformative tool that fosters understanding, tolerance, and respect. A well-rounded primary education can lay the foundation for lifelong learning and responsible citizenship.

Secondly, making education compulsory becomes a powerful tool against the menace of child labour. When education is prioritized, children are less likely to be exploited for labour, and more likely to be seen as learners rather than earners. Educating children keeps them in classrooms, breaking the cycle of poverty and reducing the supply of child labour.

Thirdly, compulsory education can lead to population control and improved economic situations, especially in poorer classes. We can see that these days more children are being borne particularly in poorer and uneducated class and they treat them as earning members since childhood. Educated individuals tend to have fewer children and invest more in their upbringing, ultimately lifting families out of poverty. Parental attitudes change as they view their children as future scholars and leaders rather than immediate breadwinners.

To ensure compliance with this initiative, strict penalties should be imposed on parents or guardians who allow their children to work instead of attending school. Governments must take proactive measures to detect and address instances of child labour, holding those accountable who fail to enable children's education.

Implementing a policy that makes basic education free and compulsory is a step towards building a more educated, equitable, and empowered society. It is imperative to act now for the future of our children and communities.
