Make Atlantic Avenue and Nevins Street intersection safe
The Issue
To the New York City Department of Transportation, local elected officials, and Community Board 2:
We, the undersigned residents, parents, neighbors, and local business owners, call on NYC DOT to take immediate action to improve pedestrian and traffic safety at Atlantic Avenue and Nevins Street in Brooklyn.
On August 12, 2026, a vehicle crashed directly into 465 Pacific Street Condominium, a residential building located at the corner of Atlantic Avenue and Nevins Street. The building has entrances on both streets and includes residences, several businesses, and a daycare. This serious crash highlights the urgent need for stronger safety measures at this intersection and along the surrounding stretch of Atlantic Avenue.

This is not the first dangerous incident in the immediate area. In 2018, residents worked with NYC DOT and local elected officials to request a No Left Turn restriction at Nevins Street. DOT determined that eliminating the turn was not feasible and instead adjusted the timing of the left-turn signal. Although that change helped, continuing incidents demonstrate that additional protections are necessary.
This location is only one block from an elementary school and is heavily traveled by children, families, daycare attendees, residents, workers, and customers throughout the day. No one should have to risk being struck while walking along the sidewalk, crossing the street, entering a business, or simply being inside their home.
We respectfully ask NYC DOT to conduct a comprehensive safety review and evaluate the following measures:
- Install a red-light camera and a speed camera at or near Atlantic Avenue and Nevins Street.
- Add physical traffic-calming measures, including hardened centerlines, safer turn designs, and other appropriate treatments to reduce vehicle speeds.
- Reevaluate the left turn from Atlantic Avenue onto Nevins Street and consider restricting it while permitting necessary left turns at safer locations, such as 3rd Avenue and/or Hoyt Street.
- Reconsider a protected mid-block pedestrian crossing on Atlantic Avenue between Nevins Street and 3rd Avenue.
- Review signal timing, pedestrian crossing times, visibility, roadway design, and crash history throughout this section of Atlantic Avenue.
- Visit the location and meet with residents and community representatives to identify immediate and long-term safety improvements.
We recognize that NYC DOT must consider traffic flow throughout the corridor. However, traffic efficiency cannot come at the expense of public safety. The history of dangerous incidents, the recent crash into an occupied residential building, and the proximity of an elementary school, daycare, homes, and businesses demand prompt action.
