STOP Changing Employee Handbook without notice which injures Employees
The Issue
When working with customers, merchants are required to have proper disclosure of policy. On the internet that is mostly represented with the click to accept for terms and conditions. In person that is often contracts with signature requirements. We employees don't have that. Why can they put in the handbook, "without notice" how is that not impeding on our rights to being informed?
We are providing a service. We are selling our services to our employers at a rate per hour or per year, and the benefits are a part of it. The policy shows us how to adhere to the requirements of the company, but the company can change it without telling us? We are being deprived our right to make informed decisions about things that affect our lives substantially.
What harm does it do to a company to tell us when they change policies? Why can’t we have proper disclosure?
Can you imagine working extremely hard and you have a vacation coming up to find out you no longer have paid time off (PTO) due to a hidden policy change? Tennessee does not require you to receive PTO and with that provision in the handbook, it could easily disappear, and you could never know.
An employer can simply just dislike you and change the employee handbook to suite whatever they can to get you out of work, and then also take your PTO as there is no law that protects you from your employer keeping your hard-earned PTO if they decide to terminate you.
It’s misrepresentation that they can hide these policy changes from you, and they can even use it to try and steal you Unemployment. Unemployment is for times when you are out of work due to no fault of your own. “At will” is a default unemployment win, but if they can find a way to manipulate the policy to make you at fault, they will save themselves some issues!
Please protect us working class. We are not peons to be abused. We should not lose our rights because an employer just wants to. Policy changes that affect our employment agreement should be with notice and ample time for us to find a new job if we don't agree.
And never forget, this can happen to anyone, including you.
