The Issue
Demand Accountability for ICE Human Rights Violations Under the Trump Administration
Petition Target:
Midwest Governors, State Legislators, Members of Congress, and State & Local Officials
During the Trump administration (2025–), U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) carried out enforcement practices that numerous credible human rights organizations, investigative bodies, and research groups have documented as severe violations of basic human rights and due process. These abuses include punitive detention conditions, excessive use of force, rising deaths in custody, forced deportations without transparency, solitary confinement used as punishment, and operations that caused fear and trauma in immigrant communities.
Evidence and reports include:
Human Rights First’s ICE Flight Monitor Report — Documents over 10,000 enforcement and deportation flights, forced transfers without due process, and deportations to countries where individuals risk persecution. Read more: https://humanrightsfirst.org/library/new-ice-flight-monitor-report-reveals-record-u-s-enforcement-flights-flights-and-abusive-conditions-under-trump-administration/
International Amnesty report on detention centers — Details torture-level conditions, overcrowding, shackling and lack of water, medical care, or legal access at facilities like “Alligator Alcatraz” and Krome. https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2025/12/estados-unidos-nuevas-investigaciones-revelan-violaciones-de-derechos-humanos-en-los-centros-de-detencion-de-alligator-alcatraz-y-krome-en-florida/
Physicians for Human Rights / ICIJ report — Shows more than 10,000 people were placed in punitive solitary confinement, often for conditions considered psychological torture by the UN, with misuse increasing under Trump’s term. https://www.icij.org/news/2025/09/solitary-confinement-in-ice-detention-spiked-during-early-months-of-the-trump-administration-report-finds/
Human Rights Watch investigation — Highlights forceful and fear-inducing ICE raids, including masked agents detaining people without clear identification, undermining accountability and civil liberties. https://www.hrw.org/news/2025/12/18/us-masked-federal-agents-undermine-rule-of-law
Multiple news reports detail record numbers of deaths and violent enforcement actions tied to ICE operations under Trump, including in the Midwest and nationwide.
These documented abuses have caused deep harm to individuals, families, and communities—both immigrants and U.S. citizens—with lasting physical, psychological, and social consequences.
Human rights are universal and must be protected wherever people live, work, or seek refuge. It is not enough to document abuses; we must demand action and accountability.
We ask Midwest leaders and decision-makers to:
Publicly acknowledge and condemn ICE’s human rights violations conducted under the Trump administration.
Support independent investigations into ICE practices, especially where conditions violated due process, dignity, and safety.
End state and local cooperation with federal immigration enforcement that enables rights abuses.
Advocate for federal accountability and structural reform that ensures transparent oversight of all immigration enforcement.
Protect immigrant communities by investing in humane alternatives to detention, guaranteeing legal counsel access, medical care, and family unity.
Why This Matters
If we fail to confront these abuses, they are likely to continue or evolve. By standing together and demanding accountability, we affirm that no government institution is above human rights and constitutional protections. This petition is not just about a policy fight—it is about protecting human dignity.
