The Issue
My husband was brutally attacked and nearly killed by a homeless person while he was simply going about his day using public transport. He suffered severe injuries that have left lasting physical and emotional scars on both of us. This heart-wrenching incident has compelled me to take action to ensure the safety of every TTC user. This is not just our story; numerous families and individuals across Toronto share similar experiences where loved ones have been harmed or threatened by homeless individuals using the TTC.
Toronto's public transportation system should be a safe haven for all citizens, offering a secure and reliable commute. Unfortunately, the presence of homeless individuals often causes disturbances that disrupt our daily travel, creating an unsafe environment for passengers. Statistics show that crimes and violent incidents involving homeless people have been on the rise, escalating public concern. This not only affects passengers but also the operators and staff who must manage these situations daily, often without adequate training or support.
The solution lies in the collaborative efforts of local authorities, social services, and the Toronto TTC board. We propose implementing a comprehensive strategy to make all TTC stations and vehicles homeless-free. Firstly, increase the number of on-site security staff, while ensuring they receive specialized training to handle conflicts involving homeless individuals humanely and effectively. Secondly, develop partnerships with local shelters and outreach programs to provide alternative resources and support for homeless individuals, deterring them from using public transport as a refuge.
Lastly, launch a public awareness campaign to educate riders and employees on how to safely respond to and report incidents involving homeless individuals. By creating a safer transit environment, we can lessen fear, encourage usage, and protect the well-being of all Toronto citizens.
Sign this petition to urge the city and TTC authorities to prioritize the safety of Toronto's public transport users and implement a strategy to make all TTC transport homeless-free. Your support can pave the way for a safer and more secure commute for everyone.
