The Issue
I am a blind individual living in a world that is heavily dependent on visual media. For far too long, I have struggled to enjoy movies, TV shows, and other forms of entertainment that are easily accessible to sighted people. I also face the challenges of epilepsy, a condition that requires me to be vigilant against flashing lights that can trigger seizures. Additionally, I have friends who are also epileptic and relatives who are deaf, yet we find ourselves unable to fully enjoy the entertainment provided by streaming platforms because their accessibility needs are not being met.
Streaming platforms have revolutionized the way we consume media, offering convenience and a vast array of content for millions worldwide. However, this revolution has left behind individuals who require audio descriptions, flash warnings, and sign language interpretation as part of their viewing experience. The lack of these features marginalizes a large part of the population, preventing them from partaking in the collective cultural experience that film and television offer. According to the World Health Organization, over 2.2 billion people suffer from vision impairment or blindness, approximately 430 million people worldwide have disabling hearing loss, and around 65 million people have epilepsy. These numbers are not just statistics but represent real people with real needs.
By making accessibility features mandatory on all streaming platforms, we can ensure inclusivity and equality for everyone. This initiative would empower people with visual and auditory impairments and those with epilepsy, enabling them to enjoy the same entertainment experiences as the rest of the population. It is not just about convenience; it is about basic human rights and dignity.
We envision a straightforward implementation of this proposal. Streaming platforms can incorporate an audio description track for all new content, as well as retrofitting existing popular titles. Implementing flash warnings for scenes that are potentially hazardous for individuals with epilepsy would greatly enhance safe viewing. Furthermore, providing an option for sign language interpretation significantly opens up the world of cinema and television to the deaf community.
The technology and tools to meet these needs already exist. Several successful examples can be found in platforms that have already started integrating these features. It is time for all streaming services to follow suit and standardize these essential accessibility options. By doing so, they will not only adhere to principles of equality and fairness but also expand their potential audience reach.
Join me in calling for all streaming platforms to make accessibility features, including audio descriptions, flash warnings, and sign language options, a mandatory part of their services. Sign this petition to demand an inclusive entertainment industry where everyone can enjoy the magic of storytelling without barriers. Let's make entertainment accessible for all today!
