Criminalization of abortion violates the fundamental human rights of women and girls. Lack of equal access to safe and dignified health services for women experiencing undesired pregnancy is discriminatory because it not only violates the rights of women but it goes against Articles 1 and 12 of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). While some may say that pregnancy does not jeopardize a woman’ health, this is not supported by the facts.  In fact, many women die from giving birth. There are an estimated 303,000 women who die each year in childbirth and pregnancy worldwide. The global rate is 211 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births. (UNICEF) The chances of dying during pregnancy increase if you have certain medical conditions. This law forces women who are raped to have the child. If a birth occurs as an outcome of the rape, there is the potential for the birth and the parental right disputes to become a lifelong battle. In 2019, 463,634 women were raped or sexually assaulted. Many women become pregnant from having sex just one time without birth control. Over the course of a year, 85% of women who have sex without birth control will become pregnant.  Let's say of the 463,634 women who were raped, 85% of them got pregnant. That is 394,088 women who will have to live the rest of their lives with the reminder that they were raped. This law is damaging the mental health of hundreds of women in the United States and could increase the amount of suicides and the number of women with depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and anxiety.
