Make Abandoning Dogs by Owners a Prosecutable Offense

The Issue

It starts with a devastating tale of a German Shepherd and a Labrador, inseparable companions for over a decade. Their owner chose to unceremoniously discard them, submitting one to the pound and leaving the other to grief. The lab sadly succumbed to anxiety and depression, dying within four months of being separated from its bond-mate.

This is not just one isolated instance. Every year, thousands of dogs suffer a similar fate, abandoned by the people they thought were their family. According to American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter U.S. animal shelters nationwide every year - many of them abandoned by their owners.

Such actions against dogs, who are a cherished part of many families, ought to be treated as serious crimes, bearing consequences much like kidnapping in human contexts. Our legal system must reflect this shared sentiment, recognizing these acts as what they really are - betrayals of trust, causing severe emotional trauma and physical harm to our animal companions.

Therefore, we urge the legislators to apply due diligence and construct laws that make forcing dogs into abandonment a prosecutable offense. All evidence of such heartless acts should be thoroughly examined in court, treating these offenses with the severity they warrant.

Our aim is to bring about justice for the abandoned German Shepherd, the grief-stricken Labrador, and countless other animals subjected to such barbaric conduct. Be a part of this cause and help us voice the unheard cries of our faithful four-legged friends. We implore you – dog lovers, animal lovers, champions of justice – join us in this fight. Please, sign this petition. Help us make a stand against the cruel act of dog abandonment. Let’s show these animals that they are not forgotten and ensure their suffering is not in vain.
