Make a change on a colonial statue in Otahuhu!

The issue

In Otahuhu, Aotearoa stands a statue named the ‘Nixon Memorial’, depicting a colonel riding atop a horse. This statue was unveiled on May 13 1868 in memory of a British army colonel, Colonel Marmaduke George Nixon after his alleged death, his death was in a battle in 1864 where he ambushed Maori where a recorded 12 Maori were killed and seemingly burned alive by the Colonel's troops as he later died from the wounds gained in battle. The man who is being glorified locked children and women in a church and then continued to burn it. This satue stands in a suburb with 16.4% Maori population and 59.4% Pasifika population according to the 2018 census results. This statue sends a message of oppression and the power that is still held over Maori.
