Maintain Year-Round Access to Wheeler Dog Park

The Issue

Wheeler Dog Park, located in Columbus, OH, is an essential communal space for fostering well-being and recreation for both local residents and their dogs. It encourages responsible dog ownership, provides a venue for exercise necessary for dogs' health, and fosters a sense of community among the inhabitants. However, accessibility is limited to only certain months of the year & halting year-round access to this park disrupts these benefits and curtails the enjoyment of the population it serves.

Studies have shown that regular outdoor play and social interaction can significantly improve a dog's mental and physical health. Prolonged periods without access to such spaces can lead to behavioural issues and health problems in many dogs. Furthermore, limiting access to public spaces such as these also impedes on human social interactions, potentially impacting the sense of community in the local area.

Considering these points, closing Wheeler Dog Park during any part of the year would equal to limiting the positive effects it provides to our city, both for its human and canine residents. Therefore, we petition the Columbus City Council to ensure the Wheeler Dog Park remains open year-round for the prosperity of our beloved community.
