As dedicated healthcare professionals at Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service (GCHHS), we are deeply concerned about the recent decision to revoke access to UpToDate for clinicians across our network. This critical resource has long supported us in delivering safe, high-quality patient care. Without it, there is a real risk of compromising clinical outcomes.

UpToDate is a comprehensive, evidence-based clinical decision support tool trusted by healthcare professionals worldwide. It provides real-time, reliable information that supports informed decision-making at the bedside. Removing access represents a significant step backwards and may push clinicians towards less reliable sources, including AI tools that do not consistently meet the same standards of accuracy and safety.

Patient safety must remain our highest priority. UpToDate delivers current, peer-reviewed information that underpins evidence-based care, reduces errors and improves outcomes. In a rapidly evolving medical landscape, access to up-to-date, trusted clinical knowledge is essential.

Beyond direct patient care, UpToDate plays a critical role in clinician education and ongoing professional development. It supports day-to-day learning, case discussions and preparation for presentations. It is widely used for Continuing Professional Development (CPD), helping clinicians stay current with best practice and meet regulatory requirements. Removing access undermines not only clinical decision-making but also the development of a skilled, informed and up-to-date workforce.

The potential reliance on alternative tools, including AI-driven platforms is also concerning. While AI may have a role in healthcare, it is not a substitute for rigorously validated clinical resources. Without appropriate safeguards, this shift could increase the risk of misinformation and patient harm.

We call upon the Chief Executive and Board of directors of GCHHS to please reconsider this decision and prioritise patient safety and clinician support.

We specifically request:

• A pause on the proposed removal of UpToDate access
• Meaningful consultation and communication with clinicians
• Transparent patient safety and organisational risk assessment
• Continued access to UpToDate unless a clinically equivalent resource is provided
• Clear guidance on the safe and appropriate use of AI in clinical practice

Our patients deserve the highest standard of care. Removing access to this essential resource places that standard at risk.
