Maintain the current block schedule in Broward County high schools

The Issue

I attend Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, a proud institution in Broward County, Florida. Recently, there is a proposed schedule change that will significantly impact students like me. The school plans to transition to having all classes every day, as opposed to our current block schedule. This change threatens to hinder the academic and extracurricular balance that many students have managed to strike.

As a student, I am committed not only to my studies but also to my extracurricular activities, sports commitments, and a part-time job. The block schedule offers flexibility, allowing me to dedicate adequate time to my studies on certain days while focusing on extracurriculars on others. The proposed schedule risks cutting into that crucial time, leaving students struggling to keep up with their academic workload.

Statistics indicate that students benefit from block schedules, as it reduces daily homework stress and allows deeper exploration of subjects within extended periods. According to the National Education Association, block scheduling can lead to improved student performance and increased teacher satisfaction. It provides much-needed breathing space for students involved in extracurriculars, helping them manage their time more efficiently.

Additionally, transitioning to a daily class schedule with multiple subjects in one day could overwhelm students, causing stress and potentially diminishing their educational experience. For those, like myself, preparing college applications, maintaining a strong academic record is crucial, and the existing schedule supports that success.

The voices of students, parents, and educators must be heard before such a significant change is implemented. I urge the school board and the administration to reconsider this decision and involve key stakeholders in discussions before enacting these changes.

Preserve the block schedule in Broward County high schools. Help us protect our educational future and personal growth opportunities by signing this petition today.
