Maintain Hartford County Family Law Cases within Hartford's Judicial District

Maintain Hartford County Family Law Cases within Hartford's Judicial District
The Issue
I am a resident of Granby, a small town part of Hartford County. Like many others, I live and work within the vicinity of my community, contributing to its vibrancy and dynamism. However, a plan proposed by the CT General Assembly threatens to disrupt this. The assembly is contemplating a bill that would transfer family law cases from Avon, Simsbury, Farmington, Canton, and Granby to Torrington. These towns are a vital part of Hartford County, and their residents should not have their cases heard far away in Torrington.
One of Connecticut's best family law attorneys, Renée Bauer says the change will impact many families already going through a difficult time.
If passed, this bill will place a significant inconvenience on us, the litigants. The additional travel and potential scheduling conflicts will undoubtedly cause strain and unnecessary hassle. According to a study done by the Journal of Empirical Legal Studies, increased travel time to court can have negative effects on case outcomes (Engel et al., 2016).
The vibrant towns of Avon, Simsbury, Farmington, Canton, and Granby are members of Hartford's judicial district for good reasons. Let's not dissolve this tie and complicate family law proceedings for our residents. We appeal to the CT General assembly and urge them to reconsider their proposed bill. Let Hartford County family law cases continue to be heard within Hartford's Judicial District. Please, join us in this petition and make your voice heard. Sign this petition now.
