Maintain a Five-Day School Week in Decatur, AR Schools

The Issue

As a parent of a student athlete in Decatur, AR, I've concerns that extended school hours and going to a 4 day school schedule could have negative effects on our children. My daughter is involved in sports and she has expressed her concerns that going to school earlier and staying later will affect how athletes perform and the alertness of the students in class with the new schedule. It will also give them little room for personal activities.

This isn't just about my daughter - it's about all students who will have to juggling academics with extracurricular activities while have to be in class longer hours per day. A study by the American Psychological Association found that adolescents need 8-10 hours of sleep per night for optimal health. Extending school hours could potentially cut into this necessary rest period, affecting not only academic performance but also physical health.

Moreover, according to the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS), participation in sports and other extracurricular activities significantly contributes to students' emotional well-being and social skills development. By extending school hours, we risk compromising these benefits.

We urge the local education authorities in Decatur to consider these concerns before deciding and maintain the five-day school week schedule. This will ensure our children get the balance they need between academics, athletics or other extracurricular activities, and personal time.

If you are a parent/gaurdian, student, or teacher that go to or work at the Decatur Arkansas school please sign this petition if you believe our students deserve a balanced life where they can excel both academically and personally without undue stress or pressure.
