Decrease the proposed 2015 Maine Moose Hunting Bull Tags & Suspend the proposed Cow Hunt for WMD Zone 9.

The Issue

On March 20, 2015 in just a few short days, decisions will be made on the # of moose permits to be distributed by way of lottery across the State of Maine. While most zones in Maine are seeing a reduction in moose permit numbers the State of Maine has recommended an increase in permit numbers for WMD Zone 9 in the Moosehead Lake Area. There is something we can do to save our Moosehead Lake Moose Population.

Starting in October and ending in November, WMD Zone 9 will host 12 days of moose hunting. For the 2015 hunting season, the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife has proposed increasing the permits from 75 to 100 bulls and 0 cows or “antlerless” to 50 tags that will be distributed by the lottery.

WMD  Zone 9 cannot handle an increase of permits. Over the past 10 years we have seen a steady decline in the moose herd of WMD zone 9 due to moose ticks, brain worm, hard winters and habitat change.  If anything the bull tags in WMD zone 9 should be reduced to 50 tags and the interdiction of cow tags should not be allowed. Each bullet that takes one mother moose, potentially takes 3-6. By the time the cow hunt arrives in November, a female moose may be impregnated with up to 3 babies. Also, she potentially has one or two calves that are only 6 months old. These young moose already have so many predators and a long Maine winter ahead, why take the mother moose at such a vulnerable stage in life?

It is obvious to all who live here that our moose herd is on the decline. We have witnessed the winter tick epidemic along with several harsh winters and how it is reducing moose survival rates. Our concern is that the added hunting pressure is causing our moose herd to be on the verge of eradication. Not only is an entire species at risk, but so is the livelihood of those who depend on live moose in our eco-tourism driven local economy at Moosehead Lake.

If we are not quick to stand up and protect the future of moose that live here in the Moosehead Lake Region they will surely become a thing of the past.

Please stop the cow hunt and reduce the bull numbers!!!! Give our moose a chance.
