Magnificat Alumnae Response to Diocesan Policy on LGBTQ+ Expression

Magnificat Alumnae Response to Diocesan Policy on LGBTQ+ Expression
The Issue
We are writing to you as proud alumnae of Magnificat High School, a place that has played a significant role in shaping our values and outlook on life. It is with deep concern and a heavy heart that we address the recent developments regarding the Cleveland Catholic Diocese's new School Policy on Issues of Sexuality and Gender Identity, and how it impacts LGBTQ+ youth.
First and foremost, we would like to commend the unwavering commitment of Magnificat High School to provide quality education in a nurturing and compassionate environment. It is this commitment to fostering a community that empowers students to become confident, empathetic, and socially responsible individuals that make us proud to be Magnificat alumnae.
However, our pride is marred by the recent policy by the Cleveland Catholic Diocese, which is in direct conflict with the values of inclusivity and acceptance that we have come to associate with Magnificat. We are deeply troubled by the potential harm that this policy may inflict upon our LGBTQ+ students. One critical issue that must be addressed is the elevated risk of mental health challenges, including suicide, faced by LGBTQ+ youth who experience rejection, discrimination, or a lack of acceptance from their communities, including their schools. Research consistently shows that LGBTQ+ individuals are at a significantly higher risk of suicide attempts, self-harm, and depression when they are not supported or validated in their identities. The new policy's deliberate rejection of gender identity and sexual orientation will contribute to this alarming problem. It is heartbreaking to think that some Magnificat students may feel isolated, unwelcome, or unsupported.
We implore Magnificat High School to speak out about the potential consequences of this policy on LGBTQ+ students. Martin Luther King Jr. said, "The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people."
Jesus emphasized love, compassion, and acceptance. Let Magnificat be a beacon of hope and support for our LGBTQ+ youth. We believe that by demonstrating our commitment to inclusivity and understanding, we can continue to be a source of empowerment for all members of the Magnificat community.
