We are putting out this petition in order to help save the futures of the many students currently enrolled in the program.

As of, February 20th the recent termination of Madison West High School's Latin program was announced. This decision comes without previous notice to students.

The ramifications of this decision lead many West Latin students without opportunities to apply for higher-level colleges that tend to require 4 years of study in the same world language. Other language programs that are provided by the school do not have space to incorporate all of the "Latin refugees" into their classes. Many students will now have trouble applying for college, as well as continuing their studies in a fascinating language such as Latin. 

MMSD continues to make decisions without students in mind, and without thought of the consequences for all of the students currently in the Latin program.

We are asking that MMSD reverses the decision of the termination of Madison West High Schools’ Latin program. Otherwise, we ask MMSD to provide a second pathway for the West Latin students, whether that being offering to pay for an Early College Credit Opportunities Program or creating a Latin Refugee class to give students an opportunity to finish their four years of foreign language

The unfortunate reality of paying for the Early College Credit Opportunities Program, however, is it is immensely more expensive than keeping the original Latin program.

The Latin Program is not the only class being cut. Other programs are affected, specifically liberal arts: classes including the Arts, English and theatre classes. Students and teachers alike will be affected by this unfortunate choice.
