The Issue

Fifteen days—it’s the span of time my beloved dog, Maddy, was missing. During those agonizing days, my family and I scoured every possible resource, called every shelter and clinic, and lived in restless anticipation. It was during this desperate search that we discovered a gap in our system: inconsistencies in how pets are scanned for microchips. Something that seems so minor can mean everything to a pet owner anxiously trying to reunite with their lost companion.

The Illinois Animal Control Act (510 ILCS 5/) currently lacks provisions that ensure timely and consistent microchip scanning. This can delay or even prevent the reunion of lost pets with their families. It is crucial for the state of Illinois to address this issue by amending the existing act in two key ways.

Firstly, every municipality should be mandated to scan deceased dogs and cats for microchips within 24 hours of recovery. Imagine the relief and closure this could provide to owners tirelessly searching for their missing pet. Municipalities should also make every reasonable effort to notify the registered owner, helping families find peace sooner.

Secondly, it's imperative that all veterinary practices scan all new canine and feline patients for microchips during their initial examination. Every moment counts when a pet is missing. Verifying whether these animals have been reported missing could be pivotal in reuniting families with their beloved pets.

This small change in the law could make a huge difference. It could spare countless families the distress of not knowing what happened to their dear pets. It could repair the broken hearts of those who are left wondering and worrying.

Join me in urging Illinois legislators to amend the Illinois Animal Control Act. Together, let us champion this cause for our pets, our families, and our peace of mind. Sign this petition to make a difference today.
