Every year Macy's puts on a 4th of July firework display. The display lasts for minutes on end, sometimes from multiple spots. Many people find fireworks beautiful, and yet there is no beauty in the environmental damage they cause.

"Fireworks cause extensive air pollution in a short amount of time, leaving metal particles, dangerous toxins, harmful chemicals and smoke in the air for hours and days. Some of the toxins never fully decompose or disintegrate, but rather hang around in the environment, poisoning all they come into contact with" (Terapass.com) Furthermore, the particles that fall to the ground are often toxic and can make their way into the soil. The Macy's firework display launches fireworks from the river, which means that the particles land in the water, polluting it. Annually, the U.S. emits 60,340 tons of carbon dioxide due to fireworks. That's about equal to the yearly amount of CO2 produced by 12,000 cars.

There are, in fact, eco friendly fireworks. "Traditional fireworks are normally made using a charcoal and sulphur fuel, a perchlorate oxidiser to help with burning, plus binders, colourants and propellants. When ignited, the pyrotechnics are spectacular, but they emit large amounts of smoke, unused perchlorates and metal by-products from the colourants, all of which are contaminates" (BBC Science Focus). Eco friendly fireworks use a nitrogen based fuel which is clean burning. Because of this, a perchlorate oxidiser is not needed, and so there is little smoke, meaning only small amounts of metal salt are needed to produce the bright coloring we see in fireworks.

Macy's does not currently use eco friendly fireworks in their displays, which is a huge environmental problem. Let's change that! The 4th of July is about appreciating our country, and in order to do that we need to take care of it.
