M-DC Water and Sewer infrastructure problems are "potentially catastrophic" according to their own report.

The Issue

We are asking the M-DC Commissioners to fix our deteriorated water and sewer system; fix the pipes at risk for ruptures across the county; and to repair the Virginia Key Central Treatment Plant to functionality until it can be closed.  The Commissioners were elected to protect our community...the County’s own report calls the consequences of inaction “potentially catastrophic."

Any further delays in fixing the sewage infrastructure across the County puts the public at risk and gambles with our economy that relies so heavily on tourism.

Miami-Dade is the greatest urban center in the Southeast. We need a water and sewage infrastructure built for the 21st century that will allow this County to continue to grow and prosper.

Quotes from Miami Herald Articles below:

• The sewage infrastructure of Miami-Dade is “being held together by chewing gum,” according to Miami-Dade Water and Sewage District (WASD) director.

• The worst problem by far, according to the DEP letters, is the county’s aging Central District Wastewater (Virginia Key). –Miami Herald, May 14,
2012

• The Central District plant on Virginia Key is designed to discharge partially treated sewage out a pipe more than a mile off shore through sewer outfalls.

• State records show that between October and December 2011 four separate failures sent a total of more than 19 million gallons spilling from
the plant.

• The largest failure at Virginia Key was on Oct. 9, spilling 17 million gallons of raw sewage.

• On Oct. 31, another million gallons of partially-treated sewage spilled out a relief valve into surrounding bay waters.
