Luna was purchased from Pets at Home, by someone who wanted to surprise his girlfriend with a cute fluffy bunny. Two weeks later, the young couple split up, the girlfriend moved out and left Luna behind. He didn’t want her either. Luna was already an inconvenience. She was quickly advertised ‘‘Free to good home’ on a selling site, with these simple words: ‘Bunny, not been looked after very well but is ok, please come asap, with 2 floor hutch and food.’ A few people replied that they’d take her. Luckily for Luna, an experienced rabbit owner spotted her and arranged to collect her. On arrival it was clear that Luna was in a sorry state. The owner had tried to clean her by giving her a bath. Luna was wrapped in a towel, soggy and wet, sitting in a saucepan! Luna was very lucky to end up in caring and competent hands at Rabbit Rescue North West. A vet appointment was rapidly arranged. Luna was about 12 weeks old, skinny, bony and severely matted. She was so matted after her forced bath that her fur had solidified like a tortoise shell. She had to be sedated and shaved. Luna is now safe and has recovered from her ordeal. She is putting on weight and the plan is to get her neutered and bonded with a partner. A forever loving home will hopefully be found soon for Luna. Pets at Home shouldn’t be selling rabbits, let alone long-haired rabbits, let alone long-haired rabbits purchased on a whim as a surprised gift for someone else! I called the suspected branch to explain what happened to Luna. I was told that they occasionally sold long-haired crossbreed rabbits and that my comments would be passed on. A few weeks ago I was told by another branch that it takes them an hour to sell a rabbit. Pets at Home claim that questions are asked and new owners vetted and that it is not easy to buy a rabbit from them. I wonder what sort of questions were asked in this case as clearly that young man didn’t have a clue, the girlfriend didn’t want the rabbit and poor Luna suffered from neglect. Luna has joined the thousands of rabbits currently sitting in rescue centres. Many of them were sold by Pets at Home. Please keep on sharing the petition and tell Pets at Home to stop selling rabbits! They need our voice. Thank you!
