Meet Fleur. Fleur was born in December, in a breeding facility supplying Pets at Home.
According to the staff at the store, Fleur was unwell on delivery and was taken to the vet where she was treated for bloat. As Fleur was on a drip, the cannula allegedly caused the ear injury that can be seen in the pictures. When she returned to the store, Fleur was kept on her own. A few weeks later, she was used in a kids workshop! Apparently she showed aggression during the workshop so Pets at Home decided that she was not good with kids. Fleur was put in the store’s adoption area and labelled as ‘different’ from her friends and needing extra care.
Fleur was exploited and used in a kids workshop and she shouldn’t have been subjected to that stress, especially as a young rabbit with a bad start in life.
Fleur is not aggressive. Like most rabbits she just doesn’t like being picked up. This is one reason why rabbits do not make good pets for kids who often get bored. Still Pets at Home continue to target children in their marketing campaigns such as the one they launched at Easter to coincide with the release of the Peter Rabbit film.
Fleur was adopted a few days ago and booked in for her spay operation. The vet and nurses who saw Fleur and her ear injury said it was unlikely to have been caused by a cannula and looked more like a fight injury.
Fights are very common in Pets at Home stores as the rabbits are put together in glass tanks and get stressed from the cramped conditions and the store environment. Fleur’s ear also looks nibbled on the side.
Whatever the truth is, we will probably never know.
What is certain is that Fleur was another victim of the pet trade and this is not acceptable.
There’s thousands of rabbits currently sitting in rescue centres, many of them were sold by Pets at Home. There is no need to breed and sell any more.
Please keep on sharing the petition and tell Pets at Home to stop exploiting rabbits! We now have over 3,200 signatures. Let’s reach 5,000!
Thank you for caring and being their voice.
