Libby was found as a stray about 18 months ago and taken in by Warwickshire Rabbits and Guinea-Pigs SOS. Luckily she was unharmed and seemed healthy. On examination it appeared that Libby was carrying a chip. The rescue then went on a mission to find the owners and hopefully reunite them with Libby, in case she had been lost. After numerous calls to the chipping company, details were provided and the owners traced back. The rescue tried to contact them by phone, text and left numerous voicemail messages to reassure that Libby was safe and requesting they get in touch if they didn’t want her. The owners never got back.
Libby had been chipped by Pets at Home and very likely abandoned.
Unfortunately, due to lack of information Libby was opened up unnecessarily to be spayed. She was already neutered. Nevertheless it was a happy ending for Libby, who was later paired up with another rabbit and adopted.
Libby’s story is not an isolated case. Rescue centres occasionally take in stray rabbits who carry a Pets at Home chip. The chips are either unregistered so the owner can’t be traced or the owner can be traced but denies the rabbit is theirs (probably because they are aware that abandoning a pet is illegal) or they don’t want the bunny back.
Pets at Home chipping the rabbits they sell does nothing to ensure those animals are protected or end up in the wrong hands.
Pets at Home needs to stop selling rabbits altogether. The rescue centres often end up picking up the pieces when they are already full of unwanted animals.
Rabbit shouldn’t be sold as a commodity and abandoned when they become an inconvenience.
